The Reykjavik Metropolitan Police has appointed a police officer to focus on hate crimes through active community policing and co-operation with subgroups in the metropolitan area.
Iceland has agreed to implement ODIHR's Training Against Hate Crime for Law Enforcement (TAHCLE) and Prosecutors and Hate Crime Training (PAHCT) programmes. Police officers and prosecutors were trained as part of these programmes.
Both of these cases were committed on the grounds of bias against gender identity.
In its fifth report on Iceland, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) noted the appointment of a specialized police officer responsible for working on hate crimes.
ODIHR observes that Iceland has not reported on cases of hate crimes separately from cases of hate speech and/or discrimination.
