Human Rights Watch reported that several of Kyrgyzstan’s most prominent human rights leaders received threats in connection with their investigations into ethnic violence that occurred in June. The Dublin-based NGO Front Line reported that five human rights defenders were severely beaten, requiring hospitalization. Front Line also reported the arrest in June of a prominent human rights defender, Azimjan Askarov, his alleged mistreatment while in detention, and his subsequent trial.
