B'nai B'rith reported 388 incidents of vandalism, including many incidents of graffiti, three arson attacks, several incidents of damage to religious objects and the desecration of cemeteries, nine incidents of the desecration of synagogues, 14 incidents of violence and 113 threats.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims reported seven physical assaults, including one against a group of students and six against Muslim women that included attempts to remove their headscarves; three cases of the desecration of a mosque, including an incident where pig’s blood was smeared on the building; one case of threats; and a bomb threat against a mosque.
ODIHR observes that Canada has not reported the numbers of prosecuted and information on sentenced hate crime cases to ODIHR.
Initiatives undertaken in 2013 to strengthen data collection included public education campaigns by police to encourage reporting by victims and the public, and training on statistical reporting to delivered to 17 police services across Canada.
